Kent BLK4 Traditional Small/Travel Sized Pure Silver Tip Badger Gents Shaving Brush Review

I resumed wet shaving last July after about 20 years of using cartridges (what the hell was I thinking?). I've been using an EJ Best Badger, which is an excellent brush. However, after reading about silvertip badger, I knew I had to have one. I did a lot of research, and decided finally on the Kent BLK 4. It was an excellent choice.

PACKAGING: Whoa! Talk about class, luxury, and any other superlative one cares to insert. The BLK 4 is housed in a beautiful, red leatherette cylinder with gold pinstriping that is lined with red felt. The cylinder snaps open /closed, and the Kent logo is embossed in the felt lining. Also, there's a little indentation on which the base of the brush stands. Essentially, it's a travel and storage case. A beautiful extra, and indicative of a quality product.

THE BRUSH: In a word, "elegant." This is a soft brush, perfect for those who lather with shaving cream in a bowl, mug or scuttle. I haven't yet tried it with face lathering using a soap puck, but suspect that this brush is best used with a cream. The bristles are perfect, and there is no funky smell at all. I've shaved with it but once, and the brush did not lose any hair. Impressive. The shaving experience is pillowy soft ... There is no scrub, scritch, or any type of scratching at all. For those who like to paint their lather onto the face and don't like bristly, scratchy exfoliant-type brushes, the BLK 4 is for you. I've read where some find the brush to be "floppy." I disagree. It has decent backbone and is not a flop-fest. However, if you want a very stiff, scrubby brush, then look elsewhere. The handle feels just right in my hand (I prefer brushes on the smaller side), and has a nice weight to it. The faux ebony look is awesome, and that cool, Kent logo with the royal warrant language on it is the icing on the cake. Totally classy.

All in all, the BLK 4 is an amazing shaving tool. Highly recommended.

First let me list the MAJOR problems with this device:

*It does not steer. You can only go straight.
*The knee pad's lowest adjustable position is 18.75 inches. At 5'7" I need the knee pad to be 17 inches from the ground or my knee is flexed too much and aggravates my arthritis. I have long legs, but most of the length is from from femurs.
*The brakes do not work well and protrude outside of the slim 14 inch width of the walker. Since you can't steer, you have to lift the front and redirect and go back and forth, you will find that the two brakes cut into all of your door jams leaving paint chips and wood fragments because you can't avoid running into things.
*There is no locking or parking brake. This is not unique. Most knee walkers do not have this feature, but it presents a safety hazard when getting up on the walker. Be careful. I took a serious spill post op day two.
*There is poor padding for the knee pad. Whether you buy or rent this, invest in a gel pad and sheepskin cover, but be careful that this does not raise the height too much.
*It can go really fast! Maybe that is a positive. Yet if the brakes do not work so well to stop you and dig into and begin ruining the tires slowing you down, then it is not so great.

Here are a few positives:

*It folds easily.
*It weighs about 20 pounds making it easy to pick up.
*It is still better than crutches!

I had right foot surgery on a Friday and was told I would go home with a cane and my walking boot. I woke up with an ortho glass splint, crutches, and told no weight-bearing. Not so happy. I've been a nurse for 30 years and a fitness professional that long as well. I also have lupus with arthritis in my hands and can't use crutches. My husband this knee walker at the only DME store that open on a Saturday and I ordered a steerable knee walker online. It won't get here for a week.

Because I am an athlete I am not a typical post surgical patient. I can balance well and do a one-leg squat to get up and down from a seated position. I am lucky. I can see how this knee walker and the only steerable one available in the store that day for $900, can easily throw people off balance. My advice is rent or buy a knee walker that steers and has a knee pad that is the most adjustable. If you move a lot, like I do, you will want disc brakes, a basket, and might want to consider one of the all-terrain models.

Avoid this model. It is a loser.
