I'm an ER physician and I bought this in a pinch as a backup to look in my kid's ear at home. I have a Welch-Allyn set that I've had for over ten years but the battery has run out. So I figured I'd purchase a replacement battery/bulb and grab another oto-ophthalmoscope set to keep as a backup or for travel, etc. I deliberately did not want to spend a lot of money. In that department, this set is a winner - about a 1/5 price of my W-A. But in terms of quality, this thing frankly is a piece of junk.First and foremost, it cannot do it's core job well or reliably. The light on my unit flickers on an off during regular use. The magnifying eye-piece is flimsy and moves around. Your exam will take 3x as long b/c of these issues, not to mention the poor light quality. This thing would have been PERHAPS suitable for the Leonardo Da Vinci era, but this isn't designed in any way for modern medicine. Secondly, and expectedly (though not quite this expected), the materials and workmanship are utter garbage. Starts with the case which is made of cheaper material than my kid's diaper wipes case. The alloy or plastic or whatever makes up the tool itself is completely cheap and flimsy. I'm not a product snob (nor do I have even one penny of a stake in any medical device company), but this kit has NO PLACE in the competition.
I give it two stars for price and because it can possibly help in a crisis to get the job done for the otoscope (the ophthalmoscope is a complete joke) - crisis being no other option available. I would absolutely recommend AGAINST this for ANY student, especially a medical student. This will impair your diagnostic capability significantly. That's the irony. I imagine this is marketed toward the "casual" user, but that's the exact person who will struggle with this. A well-trained pro or someone on an absolute shoe-string budget (because remember this is an investment, I'm reliably using my same W-A from medical school over 10 years ago!!) may find it worth a chance. But you've been warned. Mine is going back today.
