ScaleWatcher 3 Star Review

After moving into a home with very hard water, I waited several years to buy a conventional softener system. Because I garden and do not want to "salt" my plants, I bypassed that system for a good six months of the year. For these reasons, there was considerable calcification on my shower stalls and hardware, on my dishwasher, and in my toilets. I had given up on the toilets in my house - and simply resigned myself to the fact that visitors would be horrified by their calcified and unsanitary appearance.

About two months ago, I bought and installed a Scalewatcher from Amazon. Here is the run-down on my experience.

1. The shower: The very first morning after the device was installed I noticed that my shower water felt soft even though the conventional system had been on "bypass" for several months. The "softness" from Scalewatcher was about midway between that of my hard water and my conventionally softened water. Within a few weeks, I noticed that the usually dull spout in my shower tub had begun to shine, and the shower head, which was due for a soaking in vinegar, was performing better and had noticeably less calcification on it. After two months, the tub walls no longer have any calcification - and the shower head is better with every passing day.

2. The dishwasher: Over the years, my dishwasher had accumulated noticeable calcification and I was finding it a pretty useless appliance. When the water was not softened, after a full cycle the glasses and silverware emerged with a caked white film on them. To keep the dishwasher marginally useful, I would periodically unclog the holes in the water spray with a toothpick or skewer. Also, I would occasionally clean it by running it for a few minutes with a bottle of vinegar, and then letting that sit for half an hour before continuing the wash cycle. None of this worked very well, and it was a frustrating enough situation that I had taken to doing most dishes by hand.

The manual that comes with the Scalewatcher warns that for the first few weeks your dishwasher may actually perform LESS well than before, as previous calcification is released into the water. To give the device a chance to do its work, I persisted in using my dishwasher - and then rewashing glasses and silverware when necessary. I don't know that my dishwasher's performance was actually any worse than before - but there was definitely a period during which the dishwasher continued to leave a film on my dishes. Then, in a few weeks, I noticed that the back of my stainless steel interior had begun to shine. I had forgotten that there was anything shiny inside this appliance!

After two months of operation, the dishwasher is beginning to actually complete a load of dishes without the need for me to re-rinse and wipe glasses and silverware. The dishwasher is not yet working as I believe it would with city water - but it is improving gradually from day to day.

3. Toilets. GRADUALLY, the calcification is eroding. At two months, it is not yet gone, but it is noticeably better. I have resisted using a scrub brush or anything for the past two months, just to see what the Scalewatcher would accomplish on its own. Again, there has been a noticeable and welcome improvement, but I can't report that the Scalewatcher has given me shiny and immaculate looking toilet bowls. I know this may be an unreasonable expectation, but I am sufficiently encouraged that I plan to wait for another month or two to see if it happens!

The bottom line is that I would highly recommend this device. It is expensive, but the cost of salt adds up over time; lugging salt into the home is unpleasant; salt will kill your plants; and I am certain that conventional softerns have adverse effects on the environment and on septic systems. There are cheaper and more expensive devices out there, but I was motivated to try Scalewatcher for three primary reasons: 1) They have a nearly unconditional guarantee; (2) the few research studies I could find that tested this technology were done on a Scalewatcher; and (3) Scalewatcher appears to have been the originator of this technology for industrial purposes, so I believed they would have had more experience getting it right.

I will say that installing the coils can be a bit of a challenge. It is not a technically difficult project, but it requires some patience and dexterity. It will be easier if you have someone available to hand you the twist ties, etc. You may want to ask a friend over who has an understanding of plumbing to help you locate the right spot on your line to place the coils.
