I bought this awhile ago as a set to get started in the art of shaving with a straight razor. I have a bit of experience with razors and such, and i know how to get them sharp. This kit is a good kit by all standards. If you are getting into this for the first time, I will say that it is very rewarding, relaxing, and if it matters to you, it is also greener since you are not adding disposable razors to the landfills. It is also MUCH cheaper in the long run, with savings starting at around a year since you are no longer buying cartridges and such. Straight razors are a lifetime investment if taken care of properly. It really helps me start out my day more relaxed when I take the time to properly shave in the mornings, and I would recommend it to anybody. Be forewarned though. This isn't something you can just pick up. Be prepared to get a few cuts when you first start out. Lynn Abrams has a great video on shaving with a straight razor, to include STROPPING (very important) and honing. Face preparation and stropping are the two most important things to do correctly before you shave. This kit allows you to do an adequate job at both. My blade came with a free lifetime honing service, which is nice if you do not want to spend the time and money purchasing honing stones and learning to use it. I would advise purchasing a set of stones in 4k, 8k, and 12k, along with a flattening stone for the serious shaver though. Overall, I believe this is a decent kit for the beginner. I would have given it 5 stars if it had better soap, brush and bowl. My breakdown and opinion of each item is as follows:Dovo 5/8 Razor: The best part of the kit. This is a good blade for the beginner and experienced shaver alike. It comes sharp and ready to shave, or at least mine did. It really needs a good strop before you begin shaving. (Again, watch the Lynn Abrams video for the how to). 5/8 means 5/8 of an inch wide. There are wider blades out there, but you will pay a bit more. Also, the rounded corner is more forgiving than a squared off one. You will nick your ears a few times as it is until you get more experience.
Leather Razor Case: The Razor comes in the manufacturers hard case, but this is actually a very simple, but useful case for the razor. I like it, but just make sure you dry off and oil that razor before you put it in. Razors can rust fast.
Strop: Mine was VERY stiff when i got it, and it must be softened up a little before you use it. Mink oil or leather strop oil works well for that. I did however coat the linen side in green polishing paste and it works very well with that. Overall not a bad strop. I made a paddle strop (I like that much better) out of an oak plank from Lowes, a bit of adhesive spray, heavy canvas on one side from Joannes, and strop leather on the other from a local leather shop.
Brush: Standard VDH boar bristle brush. It can be purchased at a Walgreens for around $7. A little stiff until its broken in, but it does the job. I would upgrade after awhile to a decent badger brush, but its all up to your preferences.
Shave Bowl: VDH shaving bowl... nothing special but Im not afraid to handle it with slippery hands over a tile floor. If I drop it, I dont think I would hate myself. Its a good size, if a little narrow for my tastes. Not very unique, but again, its very utilitarian.
Finally the soap: Standard VDH shaving soap. It does the job, smells nice and makes a good lather. It does seem to dry out fairly quickly, but a quick reapplication with the brush and its fine. You can get refills at most stores (Walmart/Walgreens) for a buck or two if you dont want to order from Amazon. I prefer C.O. Bigelow, which is made by Proraso for the American market. This is available on Amazon, or I found it at Bath and Body Works.
Well, there it is, I hope this helps you in your search for a better shave.
