Leifheit Air Board Comfort XL Ironing Board Review

I am a quilter and mostly iron fabric and block pieces. I was hesitant to buy this ironing board because it cost so much, but I wanted something bigger than the standard size one I was using.

The ironing board arrived yesterday, sooner than the estimated delivery date (I ordered on Nov. 2, it arrived on Nov. 12), even with a three-day week-end. The board was shrink-wrapped, but it was easy to get the wrap off. It was packaged in a cardboard box with clear sealing tape, so it was easy to open.

I was disappointed at first, because I thought the board would be wider. The website information did not give the actual dimensions. This board measures 55" x 15". The height adjusts up to 39" (the adjustment works smoothly, not in pre-set increments), so you can iron sitting down or standing up. It would be especially good for tall people! It is sturdy, with almost no wobbling. I considered returning it for a board that is 18" wide, but those boards are only 49" long. I decided the extra length was more important.

The board itself is made out of what looks like highly compressed dense styrofoam, which makes the ironing board very lightweight. This is an important factor for me, since I have to set the board up every time I use it, and then put it away on hanging hooks. It comes with a five-year guarantee, so only time will tell how well it holds up. It has a thin foam pad under the sturdy cover--it's nicely cushioned, at least initially. It's also easy to set up and fold up, and the legs lock in place.

It comes with a clip-on iron rest, if that's something you need.

I also like the blunt rounded end of the board, instead of the typically tapered end on most ironing boards.

When I started ironing some fabric, the iron really does glide smoothly--it just zips along, in fact. This is an important factor when you're ironing three or more yards of fabric in one piece! I pressed some quilt blocks, and the seams are nice and crisp.

I wrote a lengthy review, since no one else has reviewed this ironing board. Overall, at least initially, I am very happy with this purchase. It is especially good for quilters who work in a small space with no room for the large rectangular quilter's ironing boards, but who want a bigger ironing surface.
