If you're reading this outside of Japan (say the USA or UK), you've stumbled onto the best kept secret (until now - mooahahah) in the shaver world.
Let me start by saying that any shaver review can be a mixed blessing in itself. It's not even really down to personal preference of shaver, because it's not always a (frontal lobe) choice. It is decided more by our beard type, shaving habits (frequency, etc.), face shape, and skin type. If it were anything less complicated, we'd all be using the same tool with optimum results, right? I can only report my own findings, based on my application.
You want to read about the aforementioned secret first, don't you? Alright, then. If you are/were researching the Panasonic ES-LV61 or ES-LV81, you probably know by now that they are virtually the same unit. The only discernible difference is that the LV81 version has three rear-mounted contacts for docking in its own personal $100+ bathtub/sauna. Not a fan of such frills myself, I decided on the LV61 unit- just the shaver. In Japan they sell this version of ES-LV61 designated ES-LV52 (-K=black -R=red). They are made in Japan, for the Japanese market, hence the absence of English in the user manual, or on the box, for that matter. I downloaded the LV61 manual from Panasonic's website. The short version is this: Charge it. Use it. Clean it with a little liquid soap and water rinse under the tap when it gets dirty.
The shaver arrived yesterday at my door- a mere eight calendar days after ordering through Amazon marketplace seller, Jstar com. At $5.02 the shipping cost was painless. The supplied charger has a US compatible plug, so no adapter needed.
The only differences I can find between the LV52 and LV61 are that the LV61 has a fancier digital display window (waahh), and the LV61 won't work when the charger is plugged in. My LV52 does, however - I tried it when it got here showing a 60% charge, so LV52 wins again. How is the shave, you ask? Well, I have tried most of the others (I've been shaving for over 40 years), and my local shaver shop carries all the ones you've probably been researching online (too many to list - we all know the usual suspects by now) and they keep them charged and sterilized for prospective customers to try. I almost went for the (Panasonic) four head ES-LF51, which is the newer, better-balanced version of the LA63, but decided to get their new flagship 5 head Lam Dash (whatever that means) instead. Not liking the price anywhere, I took a gamble on the LV52 being the same thing for less, albeit minus a warranty - which is only valid in Japan. Maybe one could be mail it back there for service, but Panasonic US won't have anything to do with it. They (claim that they) don't even have the specs for the Japanese market models.
In short:
If you want an LV61, and don't care about the no warranty issue, but would like a made-in-Japan (not China) model that works the same for $100 less, this is it.
If you don't want to spend this much, get the LF51 4 head US model with a warranty. Same high speed motor, but one less head.
My big question is, "How many Japanese men have the heavy beard that requires this kind of machine?!

My use is every other day. I shave dry with a shaving stick (I prefer ELTRON to Remington's version which leaves residue) on a heavy beard with some bristle that doesn't grow perpendicular to my skin (IE: some grow flat atop the skin surface), now with a growing number of the tougher gray whiskers, and a close-cropped van-dyke (what most folks call a goatee).
Today's maiden shearing was a pleasant experience. The ultra fast motor is quieter than Philips/Norelco (rotary) and Wahl (foil). I got an effortless shave, with fewer passes, and no grays left behind. No lay-flats or in-growns. The rotary was always king of getting those hardy little buggers, but this one's pretty good, too.
